engagement. capacity. skills. leadership.
Movement Matters has been a great partner in IMPACT Silver Spring's efforts to move towards being a nonhierarchical, democratic non-profit. Their thoughtful design and facilitation skills have helped our board more deeply understand the vision of the organization and turn that understanding into concrete policies and practices that align with our liberatory values.

Board Development and Training
Social change organizations are the heartbeat that keeps alive struggles for economic, racial, and social justice in our rapidly changing cities and communities. Yet their ability to shape political agendas and impact issues is often hindered by inconsistent and/or ineffective board engagement in organizational planning, strategy development, fundraising, and financial oversight.
With more strategic and engaged boards, we firmly believe grassroots organizations can develop more effective organizing strategies and the infrastructure needed to carry them out successfully.

Movement Matters' board development trainings were an exceptional experience that taught me how to leverage my knowledge and skills in service of advancing equity. Movement Matters made the trainings accessible for folks like me who have never served on a board and often do not see themselves reflected in an organization's board leadership. As a new board member at Teaching for Change, I feel better equipped to help guide my organization's strategic goals.

Movement Matters offers a variety of support to partner organizations to strengthen board performance. We help groups with board member recruitment, board training, facilitation of board planning processes, and accompaniment of board members in executing their responsibilities.
Our approach to board development:
- Helps board members understand the organizational infrastructure needed to meet strategic change goals in the short and long term;
- Grounds organizational oversight in a deep understanding of the organizing process, movement ecosystem, racial equity, and unique organizational values;
- Develops systems for raising the resources necessary to move organizations beyond a basic survival mode; and
- Builds internal board practices for mutual accountability.
A critical and unique perspective that Movement Matters brings to our board development work is our deep understanding of organizing and movement spaces, developed over decades of experience. "Cookie cutter" board development processes are often ill suited for community organizing and movement organizations. They produce results that can actually be counterproductive for the organization. By integrating the board development process into an organizing framework, we help organizations move to new levels of impact and sustainability.
Movement Matters' board trainings are an invaluable resource for folks who seek social justice for DC residents. They are a critical space for advocates and organizers to train together, grow together, and learn together.
